Brexit, latest updates from Italian social security authority

The Italian social security authority (INPS) has released some clarifications in relation to the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union (so-called Brexit).

In this regard, INPS specifies that a transition period has been established, from 1 February 2020 to 31 December 2020, during which EU Regulations on social security still apply to the United Kingdom, including Regulation n. 883/2004 and Regulation n. 987/2009.

In particular, the interim period until 31 December 2020 allows the application of A1 forms issued until that date for posted workers, without possible extensions over such deadline.

Given pending social security provisions and in absence of a clear law guidance, starting January 1, 2021 it could be necessary for British companies posting workers to Italy from the United Kingdom to open a social security representation in Italy in the name and on behalf of the UK employer.
